Cantor Sharon Hordes received a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University School of Music. During her studies there she sang in both the University’s Opera Chorus and Chamber Opera, performed two recitals, and was a semi-finalist in several regional vocal competitions. She also served as cantorial soloist for the Indiana University Hillel’s High Holiday services. Following graduation she spent a year at the Bureau of Jewish Education in Indianapolis preparing children for B’nai Mitzvah. She received her cantorial training through a joint-program established by the Reconstructionist Rabbincal College in Wyncote, PA and Gratz College in Melrose Park, PA. In June 2002 she became the first cantor to become invested through the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.
For the next six years, she has been served as the full-time Cantor at Ramat Shalom in Plantation, FL. While living in South Florida, Cantor Hordes has sung in two annual fundraising concerts to benefit the local Jewish day school. She has also presented workshops on Jewish music for the South Florida region of Hadassah, for the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association’s 2004 convention and at both the 2002 and 2004 Jewish Reconstructionist Federation Conventions. She played the role of “Orpa” in “Your People are Mine”, an original musical production based on the Book of Ruth. While living in Florida, she was a member of the Greater Hollywood Interfaith Council and served on the board of the South Florida.interfaith dialogue organization, “Jews and Muslims and All.” Since graduation from cantorial school, she has been an active member of the Women Cantor's Network since 2001.
In the summer of 2007, Cantor Hordes relocated to Louisville to begin serving as head of the Hebrew and Judaica department of Louisville's community day school, Eliahu Academy. She has performed in several regional Jewish music concerts in the Greater Louisville area. Cantor Hordes is currently serving Keneseth Israel as their cantor. She also teaches music and tefillah to the Louisville Hebrew School students.
Cantor Hordes grew up at Northern Hills synagogue. It was at this congregation that she became Bat Mitzvah in 1987, married her husband George in 2001 and had her daughter Leah in 2006.
